Conservation Biology of the Royal Turtle

Rohan Photo The mangrove terrapin Batagur baska is a riverine turtle once widespread and abundant throughout south-east Asia. Its stereotyped nesting habits have made it particularly vulnerable to overexploitation by human populations which, together with increased efficiencies in the techniques used to fish for the species, has led to its virtual extinction from many parts of its former range. It was thought to be extinct in Cambodia, until recently rediscovered in the Sre Ambel district in 2000. This project will gather fundamental information on its biology to help scientists and managers chart a path to its recovery.
